Lockerbie-based John Miller Ltd. is strengthening its long-standing partnership with DAF Trucks as it continues to tailor its fleet to specific operational needs.
The family-run Scottish haulier has made the New Generation DAF XG 530 FTG 6x2 the truck of choice for its demanding flat-bed work – valued for its space, comfort and long-haul capability – while the lighter, more payload-efficient DAF XF 530 FTG 6x2 takes the lead in the company’s tanker operation.
The XG now forms the mainstay of John Miller Ltd.’s extensive flat-bed fleet, with a further eight trucks on order for delivery over the next 12 months. Founded 45 years ago in Dumfries, the business operates 60 tractor units, the majority DAFs, from its headquarters just north of the border.
"At the same time, we’re seeing real efficiency gains from our 2025 DAF XF units on tanker duties, with around a 0.8 mpg improvement over last year’s trucks." Ewan Miller
“Our latest DAF XGs are proving a real step forward,” said Operations Director Ewan Miller. “They’ve become the go-to truck for our flat-bed work; strong, reliable and extremely comfortable for the drivers who live in them all week. At the same time, we’re seeing real efficiency gains from our 2025 DAF XF units on tanker duties, with around a 0.8 mpg improvement over last year’s trucks. That’s a big saving across the fleet, both in cost and CO₂. Between the XG and the XF, DAF has the balance exactly right for our operations.”
Driver satisfaction remains a key factor for John Miller Ltd., with most drivers spending the working week away from home. The spacious DAF XG cab continues to set the benchmark for comfort and practicality, with positive feedback highlighting its thoughtful living space, superior driving position and intuitive layout all contributing to driver wellbeing and productivity.

Fuel economy uptick from latest New Generation DAFs
While the XG dominates the company’s flat-bed fleet, the firm’s tanker division is showing impressive efficiency improvements from its latest model-year 2025 DAF XF 530 FTG 6x2s. Data from the general-purpose tanker operation shows a consistent 9.3 mpg average fuel consumption, representing an improvement of 0.8 mpg over earlier trucks of the same model, achieved on the same routes and with the same drivers. The uplift is expected to translate into substantial annual fuel-cost and CO₂-emission savings across the entire fleet.
These gains stem from the 2025 updates to the New Generation DAF range, including revised valve timing for PACCAR MX-11 and MX-13 engines and new smart ancillaries designed to reduce parasitic losses.
Miller added, “The way the truck is engineered really encourages economical driving, and that shows in the results. Over the course of a year, that’s a lot of fuel we’re not burning, and the equivalent CO₂ reduction is equally important. It’s good for business, good for the environment and good for our customers.”
John Miller Ltd. operates its own workshop in Lockerbie and works closely with DAF Dealer Motus Commercials Dumfries for maintenance and support. Since introducing its first New Generation DAFs in 2023, the company has continued to expand the fleet year-on-year, each new delivery bringing further gains in efficiency, performance and driver appeal.
